i thought i broke my laptop #845

Date: Saturday, April 7, 2007 Categories: nerdom

i had a 4GB linux partition on my laptop, a remnant from the horrible OS class from last fall, that i’ve been itching to just delete since I don’t use it and can’t even figure out the password anymore. but I didn’t know how so I never did. today while reading up on a random article i found out that we can manage partition through windows XP (!). I was quite excited and when I got home I went ahead and deleted my linux partition. First i thought, “hooray I got my 4GB back!” and then my second thought was, “huh. hope it doesn’t break when i restart my laptop” because I forgot there’s that “select OS” bootloader.

And then I restarted my laptop, and sure enough… it “broke” and went straight to GRUB console. I panicked for a moment, then for the 10,000,001th time, I turned to google for help. THANK GOD for google and all the nerdy people out there, turns out it was a quick fix. I just had to insert my XP CD, use the recovery console and the command FIXMBR, which as you may have guessed… repairs the Master Boot Record.

Sometimes I’m sad that I’m not geeky enough to know these stuff beforehand… :( once i get my ~*320GB*~ external (just ordered the casing yesterday!), i’m going to back up my files and reformat my drive because it bugs me that I have three partitions now. is it weird that I get way more excited to spend $70 on hard drives than clothes?

oh, in the mean time, I assigned the new partition to letter S and named it “Scully”. teehee~ my other partitions are the C drive, which i named “Caprica” and E for “Eye of Jupiter”.
