Cal Boter @ Barcelona, Spain

Date: Monday, November 21, 2011 Categories: dining out

My friend Soohan commented on my Barcelona (see entry here) facebook check-in and told me I should try Cal Boter for some authentic Catalan food. I had no idea what that means, but we were all tapas-ed out at this point and Serena was very interested on trying the restaurant, so off we went!

We arrived rather late at around 10pm, but we heard this was a normal dinner time for Spain. The restaurant was about half-filled as you can see below and only had 8 four-seater tables. Quite modest and not very packed!

I was a bit confused when ordering the wine because there were a lot of selections, all in spanish, and the prices were relatively cheap that I had to ask the waiter if it was for the whole bottle or just one glass. Turns out it was for the whole bottle, and they don’t serve wine by the glass except for house wine. I ended up getting a glass of red house wine because Serena doesn’t drink and I wasn’t about to finish the whole bottle by myself!

Serena had french onion soup and some meatballs. I forgot the exact name since the menu was in spanish, but also had some basic english translation or we would have been so lost…

I felt like having steak, so I went for sirloin steak (about €18). I should have had the tenderloin with foie gras sauce though… apparently that was the star of the menu!

Medium rare, just the way I like em steak. it was tender, juice and just a little bit bloody!

Our meal was very pleasant, but the surprise of the day was when the bill came out, and my house wine was €1 and the water was €1.15. From then on, I never had water again.

Anyway, I loved this place and would recommend it for anyone in Barcelona! It’s located just one station away from La Sagrada Familia.
